On January 18, 2026, the Valdosta-Lowndes Metropolitan Section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) received the 2026 Humanitarian Award from the Valdosta-Lowndes County Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Association. This honor, presented during the MLK Sunday Program at Morning Star Baptist Church, recognizes 15 years of dedicated service to the Valdosta community. Since its founding in 2011, the section has worked with unwavering commitment to uplift women, youth, and families through advocacy, empowerment, and community service.

This milestone is not only a celebration of the award but also a reflection of the section’s ongoing mission to create meaningful change in the lives of those they serve.

A History Rooted in Service and Advocacy

The NCNW Valdosta-Lowndes Metro Section began its journey on August 3, 2011, with a clear purpose: to engage in civic activities, promote sisterhood, and advocate for social justice. Over the past 15 years, the section has become a pillar in the community, known for its consistent efforts to address local challenges.

Some key areas of focus include:

  • Encouraging civic participation and ensure community voices are heard.

  • Economic empowerment programs designed to support financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

  • Promoting health education and access to resources.

  • Social justice initiatives aimed at addressing inequality and fostering inclusion.

These programs have helped build stronger neighborhoods and empowered individuals to take active roles in shaping their futures.

The Meaning Behind the Humanitarian Award

The 2026 MLK Humanitarian Award honors more than a single achievement. It recognizes a pattern of service built on care, collaboration, and a deep commitment to lasting community impact. The award highlights the section’s role in:

  • Building partnerships with local organizations and leaders.

  • Supporting youth development through programming and mentorship.

  • Creating professional growth opportunities for women.

  • Responding swiftly to community crises with resources and advocacy.

  • Advocating for policy changes that benefit marginalized groups.

Section President Karla Walker emphasized that the award belongs to every member, partner, and supporter who has contributed their time and energy. She noted that the section’s success comes from collective leadership and women leading with clear purpose and vision.

Examples of Impactful Programs and Initiatives

Over the years, the NCNW Valdosta-Lowndes Metro Section has launched several programs that demonstrate their commitment to service:

  • S.E.L.F.I.E Conference: These events provide young people with tools to develop leadership skills, understand civic responsibilities, and explore career opportunities.

  • Annual Community-Wide Family Reunion: This event is a fun filled day that includes food giveaways, resources for health and other non profit organizations, voter registration and entertainment for the families of our community.

  • Purple Day at City Hall: Our annual civic engagement event brings residents inside Valdosta City Hall to hear from the Mayor, County Commissioners, and local leaders promoting transparency, political education, and community empowerment.

  • Bethune Leadership Recognition Banquet: Celebrating outstanding women and youth leaders who embody service and advocacy. Proceeds support scholarships, outreach, and leadership development across our section.

Each initiative reflects the section’s belief that service is a calling, not just a duty.

The Power of Collective Leadership

The strength of the NCNW Valdosta-Lowndes Metro Section lies in its members’ dedication and teamwork. Women from diverse backgrounds come together to share ideas, plan events, and support one another. This collective leadership model has allowed the section to:

  • Maintain consistent community presence.

  • Adapt programs to meet evolving needs.

  • Build trust with local residents and organizations.

  • Inspire the next generation of leaders.

Karla Walker’s leadership highlights how vision combined with action can create meaningful change.

Looking Ahead: Continuing the Mission

As the section celebrates 15 years, it also looks forward to the future. Plans include expanding outreach, increasing youth engagement, and strengthening partnerships. The goal remains clear: to uplift the community through purposeful service and advocacy.

The Humanitarian Award serves as motivation to keep building on this legacy. It reminds everyone involved that their work matters and that together, they can continue to make a difference.

The NCNW Valdosta-Lowndes Metro Section’s story shows how sustained commitment and collective effort can transform communities. Their 15 years of service and recent recognition inspire others to get involved and support causes that improve lives. By focusing on empowerment, advocacy, and collaboration, the section sets an example of what dedicated community leadership looks like.
